[edit] Pride
The biggest pride of New York LGBT community is their gay pride week and the gay parade. The parade is the oldest gay pride parade in the world. The LGBT community of New York has been organizing this parade since 1970. All though the parade is called a March and will be called by this name until equal rights are ensured for the LGBTQ community. The parade starts from Fifth Avenue and ends at Greenwich Village passing the Stonewall Inn in Christopher Street. This parade is just a small part of the whole gay pride week events. The whole gay pride week mainly starts at the third week of June. The huge parade of LGBT community, PrideFest, the Dance shows are some of the few main events that gives the week its blooming color.
[edit] Gay neighborhoods
New York is the largest gay population city in USA. The city is populated with 272,493 gays. The city also has many gay villages (neighborhoods). The most popular neighborhoods of gays in new York are Chelsea, Eighth Avenue, Christopher Street, Greenwich Village, Inwood, Washington Heights and Park Slope. Chelsea has lots of clubs and a thriving gay scene along Eighth Avenue in the twenties--which is not to say every bar in Chelsea is gay (far from it, there is a mix, just like everywhere else in NYC). West Chelsea (27th-29th streets, west of 10th avenue) is loaded with clubs- if you are European and looking for a discotheque, this is where you want to be.
[edit] Recognition of same-sex marriage
Same sex marriages cannot be performed legally in New York. But there is a directive issued in 2008 which allows all the agencies to recognize same-sex marriage only if they are performed in another jurisdiction. New York State Assembly has passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in New York multiple times but it’s vetoed by New York senate. Legalization of same-sex marriage has major support by the city inhabitants according to latest polls and hoped to be legalized soon
